Varian Introduces Rapid Arc Dynamic at ASTRO 2024

By News Release

Varian, a Siemens Healthineers company, announced a new solution for planning and delivery on the Eclipse and TrueBeam systems that leverages a dynamic collimator and combines the benefits of IMRT and VMAT in a single solution. Varian held an event in its booth at ASTRO 2024 to introduce RapidArc Dynamic with a live LinkedIn event. RapidArc Dynamic is CE Marked and FDA 510(k) pending.

According to the company, RapidArc Dynamic can reduce dose to OAR's by up to 50%, reduce plan optimization time by more than 70% and reduce treatment delivery arms by half. Features include:

  • Directional control of IMRT and efficiency of VMAT delivery in a single treatment field
  • Ability to strategically pause the gantry during an arc rotation for enhanced modulation at optimal beam angles
  • Real-time collimator adjustments during treatment to ensure optimal dose delivery

Easily adjust the weighting between arc or modulated ports for increased control

By combining intelligent, innovative hardware and next-generation algorithms into a single solution, it is designed to maximize efficiency, helping clinicians plan and deliver treatments in less time all in a single treatment field – arc, modulated ports and a dynamic collimator. The solution also includes new GPU-enabled algorithms for fast treatment plan generation and an auto-skin flash tool to simplify and automate a multi-step process. Users can integrate current automation capabilities within the Eclipse treatment planning system, including scripting, MCO, RapidPlan, templates, clinical goals, and more.

RapidArc Dynamic enhances dose modulation capabilities and unlocks more functionality on the delivery system, enabling clinicians to:

  • Increase control of dose conformity and target coverage
  • Customize dose distribution to align with favorable anatomy through modulated ports
  • Automatically account for patient variability and enhance plan robustness when optimizing with new tools like auto-skin flash

Varian also announced an alliance with Sun Nuclear, a Mirion Medical company, to expand Varian’s comprehensive quality assurance (QA) offerings and interoperability for current and future radiotherapy solutions.

Under the agreement, Varian will sell Sun Nuclear’s SunCHECK quality management platform across its sales channels, broadening quality assurance support for its treatment delivery solutions. Quality assurance is a globally accepted clinical best practice, to meet international standards of care.

“As a leader in radiation oncology, Varian understands that our quality management and quality assurance programs are paramount for providing safe and accurate patient treatments,” said Sasa Mutic, PhD, Head of Radiation Oncology Solutions for Varian. “This alliance with Sun Nuclear strengthens our quality assurance offering with a portfolio of industry-leading products.”

“From inception, Sun Nuclear has aimed to ease radiation therapy technology adoption, enhance clinical workflows and help improve treatment outcomes on behalf of our customers,” said Luis Rivera, Executive Vice President for Mirion Medical, and President for Sun Nuclear. “This alliance with Varian, a leader in the field, is an exciting opportunity to advance these goals; allowing our mutual customers to better integrate the latest technology while maintaining the level of independence critical to patient safety.”
