Innovative MRI-LINAC Enhances Radiation Therapy Precision
The University of New Mexico Comprehensive Cancer Center has introduced a cutting-edge MRI-linear accelerator (MRI-LINAC) to enhance precision in radiation therapy. This advanced technology, available at only about 100 facilities globally, is revolutionizing the treatment process by allowing radiation oncologists to target tumors more accurately, thereby minimizing damage to surrounding healthy tissues.
One of the primary advantages of MRI-LINAC is its ability to enable real-time adaptive radiotherapy. Unlike traditional methods that require repeated CT scans and involve delays due to the need to accommodate anatomical changes, MRI-LINAC integrates MRI imaging, allowing clinicians to fine-tune treatments based on live imaging data. This capability enhances precision and reduces the likelihood of multiple treatment sessions.
Dr David Lee, the medical director of Radiation Oncology at the UNM Comprehensive Cancer Center, highlights that since its installation in April, this technology has treated ten patients, significantly contributing to personalized patient care. The initial treatments have focused on prostate, pancreatic, and rectal cancers, with plans to extend treatments to other complex cases involving nearby organs.
The MRI-LINAC's precision is particularly beneficial in treating prostate, liver, and kidney cancers, where maintaining the health of adjacent tissues is critical. This technology offers a significant leap forward, as it allows for continual monitoring during therapy. If the targeted tumor moves, the system automatically adjusts by halting radiation until the tumor is realigned, thereby sparing healthy tissues from unnecessary exposure.
Though MRI-LINAC sessions are slightly longer than traditional radiation therapy appointments, the increased accuracy and adaptability of treatment plans offer substantial advantages. This technology also supports comprehensive treatment regimens, as evidenced by current practices at the UNM Comprehensive Cancer Center, where patients may receive chemotherapy, surgery, or systemic treatments alongside precision radiation therapy.
