Penn Medicine Initiates Clinical Trial for Advanced FLASH Proton Therapy
The Abramson Cancer Center at the University of Pennsylvania has embarked on a pioneering Phase I clinical trial to explore a novel version of proton therapy for cancer treatment. Known as FLASH proton therapy, this innovative approach delivers high-dose radiation in under a second, potentially reducing the number of required sessions while minimizing adverse side effects. This marks the inaugural human trial of conformal FLASH proton therapy in the United States, targeting recurrent head and neck cancer.
The study will include 10 patients whose head and neck cancer has recurred following prior radiation treatments. These individuals are not candidates for surgical intervention, making them viable subjects for the trial. The goal is to assess whether this accelerated form of radiation therapy can enhance the quality of life by minimizing both treatment time and radiation-induced side effects, such as difficulties with eating, drinking, and swallowing.
As detailed by principal investigator Dr Alexander Lin, "Patients with recurrent, unresectable head and neck cancer face limited treatment options. Existing methods like repeat radiation are not only grueling because of significant side effects but also require a considerable time commitment. We aim to offer a therapy with reduced toxicity that is both convenient and effective, allowing patients more time for personal pursuits."
FLASH proton therapy departs from conventional radiation protocols, which typically involve daily treatments over several weeks. This new method delivers treatment in just five sessions over approximately 10 days, dramatically shortening the overall treatment timeline. The Roberts Proton Therapy Center in Philadelphia serves as the venue for the trial, casting the University of Pennsylvania as a leader in advancing proton therapy research.
