NVIDIA and Siemens Healthineers Collaborate to Enhance Adaptive Radiotherapy with AI Technologies

NVIDIA and Siemens Healthineers have established a strategic collaboration focused on advancing AI-enabled technologies in the field of radiotherapy. This partnership aims to enhance the patient experience, support personalized treatments, streamline workflows, and expand access to care.

The collaboration seeks to leverage advancements in radiotherapy and significant computational capabilities to explore how artificial intelligence can improve treatment planning and delivery. This includes automating clinical tasks, virtually simulating care, and utilizing real-time data processing during radiotherapy sessions.

As global cancer diagnoses increase, with over 21 million cases recorded in 2024 and projections reaching 35 million by 2050, healthcare systems face mounting pressures. They must find innovative solutions to deal with ongoing workforce shortages, financial constraints, and increased complexity in operations while ensuring the availability of sophisticated treatments like adaptive radiotherapy, which generates vast data and adds complexity to clinical workflows.

The integration of AI holds promise for addressing several challenges in the delivery of personalized, adaptive radiation therapy. These challenges include:

  • Increased workloads and pressures on clinical teams.
  • Limited capacity to model treatment performance as patient anatomy evolves.
  • The lengthy and expertise-heavy process of individual treatment planning, restricting treatment volumes.
  • A demand for more clinicians than currently available to implement universal adaptive radiotherapy.

To meet these challenges, NVIDIA and Siemens Healthineers have identified key focus areas for developing adaptive radiotherapy solutions:

  1. Agentic AI in Treatment Planning: This concept aims to streamline the treatment planning process by employing AI agents to assist clinicians in evaluating treatment options and automating workflows, thereby reducing the inputs required from specialists.
  2. Advanced Patient Simulation: Utilizing patient-specific digital twins, clinicians can simulate and revise treatment plans without the patient being present. This technology will allow for ongoing updates based on new imaging data acquired throughout treatment, enhancing precision and personalization.
  3. Real-Time Adaptive Computing in the Treatment Room: By employing NVIDIA Holoscan technology, future solutions could provide real-time processing of imaging and treatment data, allowing clinicians to respond instantaneously to changes in patient anatomy and maintain treatment precision.

Siemens Healthineers has already introduced advancements in cancer care, such as the Accela radiotherapy system. This system, powered by NeoArc technology, optimizes time and efficiency in imaging-to-treatment workflows, achieving significant speed improvements in treatment delivery.

The collaboration between NVIDIA and Siemens Healthineers is poised to transform adaptive radiotherapy, aiming for a future where personalized cancer care is both practical and scalable, ultimately enhancing the patient experience globally.
